Solar DEMU trains start rolling

Solar DEMU trains start rolling: This is how much Indian Railways will save

The Indian Railways spends a huge amount of money on diesel to power its trains each year which, apart from the monetary impact, also takes an environmental toll. To address the issue, the Railways is looking seriously at solar and flagged off a solar DEMU rake recently.

The Indian Railways’ newly launched solar diesel multiple unit trains (DEMU) are expected to save hundreds of crores for the government in fuel bills as well as reduce the carbon emissions. The Indian Railways spends a huge amount of money on diesel to power its trains each year which, apart from the monetary impact, also takes an environmental toll. To address the issue, the Railways is looking seriously at solar and flagged off a solar DEMU rake recently. The department has already increased the speed of installing rooftop solar in railway stations and railway crossings. The solar DEMUs will take the energy saving plan of the department a step further.

Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu has set a target of saving the Railways Rs 41,000 crore in energy expenditure over the next 10 years. For that, the solar power project is crucial. In the 2016-17 budget, Prabhu targeted setting up 1,000 MW solar power generation capacity to reduce the reliance on diesel.

According to an energy policy report published by the Indian Railways in November 2016, the cost of energy consumed by the Railways is 24.16 per cent of its ordinary working expense which breaks into 14.72% diesel expenditure and 9.44% on electricity. The diesel bill of the Railways increased from Rs 7,297 crore in 2007-08 to Rs 22,716 crore in 2014-15. It is one of the largest consumers of diesel fuel in India. In 2013-14, the diesel consumption of Indian Railways was around 2.6 billion litres, as per official data.

According to the Railways, the solar DEMU system helps reduce carbon footprint of these commuter trains and cuts carbon dioxide emission by 9 tonnes per coach per annum. It projects a saving of 21,000 litres of diesel per DEMU train with six trailer coaches and that will translate into savings of Rs 12 lakh per year. The proportional rise will be seen as coaches increase to 10 coach rake with eight trailer coaches. The Indian Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai has manufactured the new train which will run on a 1,600 hydraulic horsepower (HHP) DEMU unit.

The Divecha Centre for Climate Change, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore conducted a research and trial runs of such DEMU rakes and projected an ideal return on investment period of about 7.5 years. However, it said that the period could go up to as much as 10.6 years if the annual rate of depreciation of the solar photovoltaic system is considered. The coach has a life of 25 years. Considering the fact that Indian Railways operates over 63,500 coaches and most of them are exposed to sunlight of at least 300 days on average according to the Railways, this system could be expanded to save hundreds of crores of rupees for the department.

CAG raps Railways for serving food ‘unsuitable’ for consumption

The CAG report said unpurified water straight from the tap was used in preparation of beverages, waste bins were not found covered, not emptied regularly and not washed, food was not covered to protect it from flies, insects and dust, and rats and cockroaches were found in trains.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on Friday came down heavily on the Railways saying cleanliness and hygiene were not being maintained in catering units at stations and in trains and it was serving food unsuitable for human consumption. “During the inspection at select 74 stations and 80 trains, audit noticed that cleanliness and hygiene are not being maintained at catering units at stations and in trains,” the Comptroller and Auditor General of India said in a report tabled in Parliament.

“Articles unsuitable for human consumption, contaminated foodstuff, recycled foodstuff, shelf life expired packaged and bottled items, unauthorised brands of water bottles are offered for sale on stations,” the CAG said..

Railway Fears Air Travel will be No 1 choice in Next 3years

Railways blueprint confirms its fears: Air travel will be No. 1 choice in three years

The blueprint analyses government statistics to show that 25 per cent of domestic air travel happens over inter-city distances within 500 km — a segment where the Railways was always believed to enjoy a monopoly — contrary to popular perception that air travel is chosen only for 800-1,000-km distances.

A blueprint prepared by the Railways has just confirmed its worst fear: within the next three years, domestic airlines will overtake it as India’s most preferred mode of long-distance travel for upper-class passengers. The projection for 2019-2020 is detailed in a blueprint on the future business scenario prepared by the Railway Ministry, raising the first official red flag over the national transporter losing its upper-class clientele to the booming domestic airlines sector.

While speed has traditionally provided the edge for airlines, “price” has now given them a complementary advantage, says the blueprint, which warns that these two factors need to be taken up on an urgent basis.

The blueprint analyses government statistics to show that 25 per cent of domestic air travel happens over inter-city distances within 500 km — a segment where the Railways was always believed to enjoy a monopoly — contrary to popular perception that air travel is chosen only for 800-1,000-km distances.

It is essential that Indian Railways addresses the two key value propositions of airlines passenger business — price and speed — immediately to sustain its core business in the passenger segment in the future,” it says.

This should serve as a “wake up call”, and require clear cut strategies on pricing and capacity augmentation, it says.

The blueprint is part of an internal assessment report commissioned by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and prepared by the Railway Board to map a comprehensive overhaul and possible course correction.

”With the proliferation of airports into small towns and massive thrust of low-cost airlines to Tier-II and III cities, there is a clear pattern emerging of air being preferred for even shorter hauls by passengers,” it says.

Apart from airfares coming closer to rail fares, proactive government policies like UDAAN, which provides for air travel of less than an hour for Rs 2,500 will also provide impetus to the civil aviation sector, the blueprint concludes.

”This should be viewed as an overall healthy trend for the economy,” NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy told The Indian Express. “For shorter distances, the Railways had started losing share to the road sector, and now for long-distance travel, civil aviation sector has been claiming its share. Eventually, multimodal transport development will happen seamlessly, and it will not be viewed as an either-or binary of road and air travel,” he says.

The number of total passengers carried by domestic airlines has been spiking towards the 100-million mark for the last few years. They carried around 97.8 million between December 2015 and November 2016, the report notes. The comparable classes on Indian Railways — First AC, AC-II, III and First Class — carry on an average 145 million passengers every year.

For Railways, this segment has been either shrinking or plateaued. From a growth of 9.5 per cent in 2014-15, it shrunk to 5.01 per cent in 2015-16, the report notes. ”The 20 per cent year-on-year growth of the civil aviation sector is likely to sustain in the short run-up to five years and then taper out to a 10 per cent average annual growth rate,” it says.

The report says that till Dedicated Freight Corridors are commissioned in full, the average growth rate of the upper class segment will remain a tepid five per cent. “…the number of passengers by air would exceed the upper class rail passenger numbers by FY 2019-20,” it says.

The Railways has been losing passengers in the up-to 100-km segment over the years prompting the Parliamentary Standing Committee to question it a couple of years ago. At the time, the Railways had attributed it to the proliferation of two-wheelers and improvement in rural road connectivity.

“For years, we have refused to see the writing on the wall. This is the global trend in developed economies, wherein the Railways do not serve long-distance passenger travel. That load is rightly taken by air,” says Ajay Shukla, former Railway Board Member (Traffic).

”Railways should ideally cede the market of long-distance services, like Delhi-Chennai and others to air and free up its own capacity for more freight trains, which will be a real contribution to the economy,” says Shukla.

Rail services are fully operational in the states and have not been affected by the floods, said a senior Railway Ministry official. Railway officials of North Frontier Railways are keeping a watch on the situation and a special control room has been set up, the official said. Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain, who is from Assam, was also present in the meeting.

As many as 80 people have lost their lives in the floods that have hit 58 districts in the Northeast, Union minister Jitendra Singh had said yesterday. Singh, who reviewed the flood situation in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur with officials of these states, said the damage caused by the rains was “unprecedented”.

BRING YOUR OWN FOOD SAID RAILWAYS

.'Bring Your Own' is Railways' Answer to Complaints of Inedible Food

AK Mittal has said that passengers should carry their own food and not rely on the railway pantry till their kitchens are revamped – a process that may take over an year.

New Delhi: The Railways has come up with a temporary solution to complaints of poor quality food on trains – bring your own.

A Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report had recently deemed the food served on trains and sold on platforms as "unfit for human consumption".

Adding to the Railways' embarrassment, a lizard was found in a vegetarian biryani served on the Howrah-Delhi Poorva Express. One of the passengers fell ill and later complained that he had developed stomach ulcers and infections.

Reacting to the complaints, the Railway Board has asked passengers to bring their own food, at least till railway kitchens are revamped. This, the Board says, may take more than a year.

"Passengers should carry their own food. Our kitchens are being revamped and that may take over a year," AK Mittal, Chairman of the Railway Board, said.

Reacting to the CAG report, the Ministry of Railways had claimed that the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) would be forming a new catering policy by unbundling the current services on trains

Think differently and positively

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: 'I am blind, please help.' There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words.

He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, 'Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?'

The man said, 'I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.'

What he had written was: 'Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.'

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?

Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.

Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have.
Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively.

Obstacle in Life ???????????????

Obstacle in Life.jpg

While we all pray for each other that one should not come across any obstacle in life, I have a different view after read the following.

We must come across obstacles and need to pray for each other to overcome obstacles (with some pain) and progress.

One night recently my daughter, Elizabeth, was showing me an aquarium full of tadpoles. She had purchased a whole bag full of them for her children (my grandchildren) to watch grow from tadpoles into frogs. It was fun watching all of those little wiggly creatures swimming around in the aquarium! It brought back many fond memories of my own childhood, playing with “critters” down at my grandparent’s house.

I noticed that there was a big rock in the aquarium. When I asked her why she put a rock right in the middle of the tadpoles’ environment, Elizabeth told me an interesting story. I can hardly believe that I have lived almost fifty-nine years without having heard it because it is so good.

Elizabeth said that when she went to the pet store to buy the tadpoles, the gentleman told her to be sure to put a big rock right in the middle of the aquarium. The tadpoles must have this obstacle to give them the incentive to climb up and thus split their little wiggly tails so that their legs can begin to develop. If they have no rock or obstacle to climb up on, they will never turn into frogs. They cannot learn how to hop by just swimming around in water. They must have something causing resistance to give them the incentive to leap forward.

The man went on to tell her that last year a school teacher came back to the store and complained because none of her tadpoles had ever turned into frogs. She had put all of them in an aquarium and let them swim around but they never became frogs. He asked her if she had put a big obstacle, like a rock, in the middle of the aquarium. She said that she had not. She did not know that a tadpole will remain a tadpole unless it faces some obstacle or barrier that forces it to grow. Neither did I, but it makes perfect sense.

So, my daughter was excited to show me all of the tadpoles swimming around the rock. In time, they will begin to try to climb up it and eventually they will make the transformation into a more fully mature creature.

I was amazed and delighted to hear that story. It helped me begin to see, once again, why we have obstacles and barriers in front of us. They are not there to hinder us, but they are there to cause us to grow. It is not so much what the object is in front of each one of us that matters as much as it is our attitude towards it. If we realize that the obstacle we are facing is really a gift that has come our way to help us grow and mature, we will be much more likely to face it in a positive manner.

Since I watched those tadpoles the other night and saw the big rock in their aquarium, I have begun to see the obstacles I face in a different way. Instead of being rocks in my path, those obstacles have become stepping stones to help me leap forward in whatever situation I find myself.

I know that those little tadpoles have no idea what is going on. They just are not that smart. The truth of the matter is, neither are we. Most of us have no idea what is going on in our lives either. We don’t understand that the barriers and obstacles, challenges, difficulties and hard times that come our way each day are actually there for a purpose. There is no way we will have the incentive to grow, or to become better, or to strive harder, if everything in life is just a simple situation. I know the harder I work at anything, the more profitable it is for me, not only financially, but personally, in my own heart and character as well.

So, the next time you see a frog hopping around, smile at him and thank him for the lesson, remembering the struggle he has gone through to get where he is. Perhaps out in the wild somewhere, he faced a difficult rock or barrier in his life, but rather than swimming away from it, he just crawled up on it and began to develop his personal strength until he eventually matured to become the frog that you see hopping around.

Moral: Remember... Obstacles are there to help you...

"Be someone"

Interesting things about Sachin
Tendulkar's Dream
Sachin Tendulkar got the name Sachin because his family members were all huge fans of the legendary music director Sachin Dev Burman (SD Burman).

First step towards cricket
Tendulkar's sensational journey to cricket stardom sparked of when his brother Ajit made him meet Mr. R. Achrekar ( Cricket Coach ). Sachin failed to perform in the first go which made him very nervous but his brother's persuasion led Mr. Achrekar give him another chance.
Sachin originally wanted to be a professional tennis player. When he started playing cricket Young Sachin had aspired of being a fast bowler, It was this dream that made him undertake trials at Chennai based MRF pace academy, but his small stature proved to be a major hindrance to his aspiring career. Then he decided to take batting seriously.

Turning point in his career
It was his change of school to Shardashram Vidya Mandir in Dadar - close to Shivaji Park on his coach's advice which marked a turn around in Sachin's career. He says," I use to bat in four nets at one strech. Whenever, I use to get tired, Achrekar use to keep a one rupee coin on top of the stumps and say, "Anyone who gets him out will take this coin. If no-one gets him, Sachin takes it." Tendulkar till date contributes this technique in being instrumental for enhancing his concentration. He still treasures the 13 coins earned by him during the practice sessions.

Naughty Duo
Sachin and his best pal Vinod Kambli hold the World Record of 664 runs stand for Shardashram School in inter-school tournament in 1988. Tendulkar candidly admits that the total would have never assumed mammoth proportion had he and Kambli not ignored the man waving from the boundary with the coach's message to declare.

Gift from Sunil Gavaskar
Sachin was given a pair of pads by his cricket hero Sunil Gavaskar when he was a schoolboy - and he made his Test debut for India against Pakistan aged just 15-years old in 1989 wearing those very pads.

Love in MotorSport
Sachin seriously loves his motorsport. In 2002 he was given a brand-spanking new Ferrari 360 Modena by six-time World Champion Michael Schumacher at Silverstone!

Sachin in Bollywood
Sachin made a special appearance in the Bollywood film "Stumped" in 2003 as himself.

Tendulkar's Idol
Tendulkar's idol is the American Tennis superstar-John McEnore. During his young age, he argued and fought for McEnore with his colony friends who supported Swedish Bjorn Borg. Sachin sported a head-band, sweat-band and a tennis racquet showing his staunch loyalty towards his idol.

Superstitious Sachin
Like loads of other cricketers, Sachin is pretty superstitious - he'll always put on his left pad before his right whenever he's getting padded up.

Family Quirks
Sachin's wife Anjali tends to become nervous while he bats, whereas his brother has become so superstitious that he allows the family members to only watch the match recording.

His reactions to his dismissals
On pre-mature and early exits, Sachin likes to take out his anger somewhere. He prefers to be left alone, till he cools down.

God's Importance in his life
Tendulkar is a God fearing person, a staunch devotee of Sai Baba, Ganpathi and frequently visits temples during night when it's calm and quiet. He visualizes God in his parents. Religion to him is what his parents have inculcated in him, his upbringing and his way of life. Sachin strongly believes in the concept of re-birth, existence of Hell and Heaven. He loves celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi at home with his family and believes that it firms his ties with his loved ones.

Other things
Sachin was just 17 years and 109 days old when he scored his debut Test century against England at Old Trafford back in 1990, finishing up on 119 not out.

Sachin was the first ever foreign cricketer to play for Yorkshire in 1992. Before then, only players who were born in the county were ever allowed to play for Yorkshire. But the rules were changed and in came a 19-year-old Sachin, scoring 1000 runs at an average of 46.

Sachin was the first batsman ever to be given out by the third umpire when he was run out against South Africa in the first Test in Durban back in 1992.

He uses an incredibly heavy bat at the crease, weighing in at 3.2lbs - in fact, only South Africa's master blaster Lance Klusener uses a heavier bat in world cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar got his first one day international century after playing 78 matches and five years of international cricket. People were beginning to wonder whether he will ever get to the three figure mark but on September 9, 1994 he silenced all his critics with a masterly 110
